Title: Women Abuse & Suicide – What to do When Your Patient Discloses

In a family-based practice, it is essential that naturopathic doctors know what to do when a patient discloses that they are not safe. This session will discuss your how to identify, evaluate the degree of severity, provide appropriate referrals and properly document and in the case of woman abuse and active suicidal ideations. Half of all women in Canada have experienced at least one incident of physical or sexual violence since the age of 16. Woman abuse constitutes physical abuse, sexual abuse, emotional /verbal abuse, financial abuse, spiritual abuse, and criminal harassment/stalking. It is key that as primary health care practitioners, naturopathic doctors are trained properly to safely assess a patient who discloses abuse and provide the applicable resources, when appropriate. Using the “CCNM Woman Abuse Manual” (of which speaker, Dr. Beverly Huang is a co-author), conference participants will be given a fundamental algorithm to use for future reference.
