Title: Evidence-Informed Primary Care Practice: A Case Based Discussion
Speaker: Dr. Monique Aucoin ND & Dr. Kieran Cooley ND

This presentation will review the principles of evidence informed practice and critical appraisal, and how they fit with naturopathic medical practice – strengths, limitations, and opportunities. This portion will be interactive and encourage participant reflection.  The presenters will review how to ask a clinically relevant question in the PICO format, how to effectively search the scientific literature databases to find the most useful evidence and how the different methodology types fit into the hierarchy of evidence, and will review different approaches to critically appraise a study.

Learning objectives:

  1. Discuss how evidence-informed practice fits with Naturopathic Medicine
  2. Frame a question using the PICO format
  3. Identify databases and strategies for efficiently searching for literature
  4. Use a critical appraisal tool to evaluate a research study and its findings.
