Description

In order to optimize sexual health throughout the lifespan, and the relationship one has with their sexuality, it is important to explore messages and experiences children have early on so as to enable them to more fully embrace and integrate the sexual self.  This conversation aligns with naturopathic principles of treating the whole person, engaging in prevention, and providing education. This presentation will explore the range of “normal” within human sexuality, the impact of messages from society, media and family on a child’s developing sexuality, and role of naturopathic doctors in promoting a healthy sense of sexuality in developmentally appropriate ways.

Learning objectives:
1. Define attributes of healthy sexuality, ie. the ultimate goal
2. Describe strategies of discussing the range of “normal” expression and experience of sexuality throughout the lifespan
3. Identify strategies of promoting a developmentally-appropriate foundation of sexual self-esteem, advocacy skills, and personal responsibility in children (if in person) Practice skills of communicating with parents and older children about healthy expressions of sexuality
