This course provides a comprehensive, evidence-informed exploration of botanical medicine in the management of inflammation and nervous system regulation. Participants will examine the pharmacologic principles underlying botanical therapeutics, including the actions of key phytochemical classes such as polyphenols, terpenes, and alkaloids on physiological pathways like NF-κB, COX/LOX enzymes, cytokine signaling, and the hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal (HPA) axis.
The session offers an in-depth review of clinically relevant anti-inflammatory botanicals as well as neuroregulatory and nervine herbs. Emphasis is placed on evaluating current evidence, understanding mechanisms of action, and applying knowledge to clinical indications, safety considerations, and herb–drug interactions.
Through case-based discussion, participants will develop practical skills in clinical decision-making and individualized treatment planning, integrating anti-inflammatory and neuroregulatory botanicals into patient-centered care. This course equips clinicians with the tools to apply botanical pharmacology effectively and safely within an integrative therapeutic framework.
Learning Objectives
- Explain the key pharmacologic mechanisms through which botanical medicines modulate inflammatory pathways and nervous system function, including effects on cytokines, COX/LOX enzymes, NF-κB, the HPA axis, and neurotransmitter regulation.
- Evaluate and compare evidence-based botanical therapies for managing inflammation and supporting neural regulation, including the clinical actions, indications, dosing considerations, and safety profiles of major anti-inflammatory herbs and nervine/adaptogenic botanicals.
- Develop individualized, integrative treatment plans that combine anti-inflammatory and neuro-regulatory botanicals using case-based reasoning, with attention to formulation strategies, herb–drug interactions, and patient-specific presentations.
