Title: Altered bioavailability, inhibitors and inducers: the effects of foods on drug metabolism
Speaker: Dr. Jean-Jacques Dugoua PhD ND
The purpose of this presentation will be to discuss the drug interactions posed by foods. The most common drug interaction foods will be discussed, such as grapefruit, cranberry and garlic, along with other lesser discussed foods and spices. An emphasis will be placed on the critical interpretation of the case reports of harm and pre-clinical pharmacokinetics studies. An emphasis will also be placed on the limitations of applying the existing scientific data to every day clinical practice, including a discussion on dosing, frequency, dosage form and identifying the active ingredient having an pharmacokinetic effect.

- Participants will learn about basic principles of pharmacokinetics, including the effects on drug metabolism of altered bioavailability, inducers and inhibitors.
- Participants will learn how to access resources that will enable them to determine drugs-food interactions.
- Participants will learn the most common foods and minerals that alter drug absorption.
- Participants will learn the most common foods that induce and inhibit drug metabolism.
- Participants will learn of foods that may affect blood clotting.
- Theoretical drugs interactions will be discussed.
