Title: Caring for Patients with PTSD
Speaker: Dr. Amy Alexander MD

In this 2-hour lecture Dr. Alexander provides a detailed overview of types of psychological trauma and their physical and behavioral sequelae.  She also discusses the prevalence and public health burden of psychological trauma and the neuroscience of trauma as a key etiology of chronic illness, chronic pain, addiction and mental illness.  This lecture provides a useful overview of trauma-informed care and while explaining ways to provide it in a primary care setting

Learning objectives:

  1. To review types of psychological trauma and the behaviors that often result from them in the primary care relationship
  2. To understand the links between psychological trauma and chronic illness
  3. To explore ways to provide high quality, trauma-informed care to patients who have experienced psychological trauma
